Body Diversity or a Token Stunt?

This season of Tyra Banks' "America's Next Top Model" will feature "short" girls--all under 5'7''

In previous seasons, Ms. Banks has given opportunities to a variety of women who may not have fit the "high fashion" mold. Most significantly, perhaps, was her selection of Whitney Thompson to compete along size sample-size models (I refuse to call them "normal" models when Ms. Thompson's size 12 frame makes her much closer to "normal" than the double zero's.). Not only did she compete, but she won cycle 10.

This season, Tyra is tackling "petite" models, which is great. But, I'd like to add that petite sizing starts at 5'4'' and below, whereas most of these girls seem to be just under the sample-sized model standard of 5'7''-6'1'' at about 5'6''--so is this really an opportunity for truly petite women to compete? I would say yes, and no. Petite women are not (unless I learn that there's someone 5'2'' in the running) really competing here, but non-sample sized women are, which is a general boon for body diversity.

  1. I love Tyra. Yet, I have to say very view of any the contestants do modeling after the show. Most going into acting, business side if fashion, or just back home. If you notice, each season the gauranteed contracts seem to get smaller.

Eva Pigford is the only one I see working alot.

Adrianne Curry landed reality TV stardom.

Toccara Jones has had reality tv, a workout video, and some hosting gigs.

But out of about 12 cycles I can only recall 3 models.

So from that aspect the most each girl can hope from the show is a porfilio of pictures.

  2. Whitney has also got a few more "modeling" gigs, but definitely in the plus-sized Ghetto, like "Mode."

But, yeah, your right. Its not a sure way toward quality modeling work, but the portfolio is valuable, the experience and constructive criticism (mostly that from Mr. Jay on set who actually helps them find the light and get into interesting poses) could be helpful.

Adrian Curry seems to have taken it the furtherest with like four reality shows--Top Model, the Surreal Life, My Fair Brady, and then Brady and Maybe Baby? She was also in that Courtney Cox show about tabloids, Dirt, so she's trying to do the mainstream acting thing too.

Still, no body is a "Top Model" or even a regular catalogue girl.

  3. One thing though, when I was looking for a picture of Whitney in google images, there were tons that weren't from ANTM, so she has been getting work to a certain degree.
