Great article recommendation: How Does Your City Garden Grow? Read it at Salon.com
Terry Bryant, a food justice advocate and chef--and a favorite at Fat Feminist Fitness Blog--is quoted extensively and talks about his experience with urban gardening and the renewal of this practice (carefully pointing out that it is in NO WAY new!)
I also like the admission that growing your own garden in no way to "save money" the first couple of years--it takes cultivation, you need supplies, you need to improve your soil or the rented soil, etc. It is an investment because eventually you will save money, but its not just about throwing some cheap seeds over grass and abra-ka-dapra you have a sustainable urban garden! You gotta put alot of work into it and in time, it will pay off in dividends!
