Obese teen credits surgery for weight loss

I think we as a society need to investigate overweight children and blame the parents. Kids don't have jobs, most aren't even allowed near the stove. So if a child is 400 lbs at 12. Then it is the parents. I feel this should fall under child endangerment

Let Go of Negative Thinking to Lose Weight

Tracy Rose at Suite101.com wrote about Practice Positive Self Talk:Let Go of Negative Thinking to Lose Weight . The highlights of the article are:

1.How you think about yourself directly relates to how you feel about yourself.
2. Overweight people tend to think negatively about themselves.
3. Negative comments from family and friends stick with them for a long time if they go unchecked.
4. Comments made about your weight and body as a child can effect how you feel about yourself as an adult.
5. Challenge your negative thoughts to find out if they come from a real place.

A Better Me! By Tammie Temple in the January 2010 issue of Guidepost also talks about how positive think can be a turning point in your weight loss journey.

Support in Weight Loss Efforts

Many people say a lack of emotional support causes them to struggle in weight loss efforts. Well, I use to feel that way until I reframed what support means to me. For example,

Old way of thinking: My husband doesn't want to exercise with me he must want me to be fat.
New way of thinking: Husbands allows me 20 minutes in front of his precious couch to do a workout video is a tremendous sacrifice in his mind for my weight loss.

Old way of thinking: Friend comments on me returning for seconds. She just wants to put me down.
New way of thinking: Friend is just mirroring back the concerns I have expressed to her about my weight.

Therefore, in 2010 I will focus on the good intentions of those around me in my weight loss journey versus expecting them to bend over backwards and change their habits to help me lose weight.

Carnie Wilson Addiction Struggles

Carnie Wilson send a cautionary tale about weight loss surgery.

"After two years of sobriety, Carnie has decided to finally share her secret to help others realize surgery isn't a cure-all. "I'm here to get the message out that after you have a gastric bypass surgery, you need to focus on what's in your head," Carnie says. "Before the surgery, you focus on it. During the surgery, you focus on it. After the surgery…it is ongoing forever."

I am glad she came forth. It is true that many overweight people think that losing the weight will fix all of their life problems. Yet, the truth is that it only fixes the wait.

If you weight is a result of addiction, you will just transfer to another addiction.

More to Love and Race

I am watching the "More to Love" Episode 1 and I want to know what happen to all the black women and latin women the interviewed in the preview videos.

I think it is pretty whack that we can request fat acceptance, but the white man on television can't give woman of color an equal chance to find love.

The only person on a dating show who gives all types of woman ( size, race, age, ect.) a chance was Flavor Flav.

So I am going to give out a shotout to Flavor Flav for holding true the commitment to try to get with any woman.

Oprah's Focus for 2009

Below is what Oprah's personal focus for 2009:

So now everybody's asking about my new plan to take the weight off. And here's what I've come to: My focus is no longer on the weight. My focus this year will be on how to achieve optimum health, get support when I need it, find ways to nurture myself, deepen my spiritual connection—and have some fun.

If I can shift the paradigm from weight to optimum health and well-being, I know for sure my best life is waiting to unfold.

I think it is good for her and other dieters to start focusing on health, well-being, and balance. Obviously focusing on weight alone has not kept her thin and if she can't stay thin with her money then weight loss has to be more than just the tools we use to lose weight.

I also suspect that Oprah also found out what many dieters find out the hard way:
Losing weight does not fix any problem besides obesity.

Therefore, if you have emotional, financial, and/or social problems they will still be there when you lose the weight.

Mo'Nique Sets the Record Straight

I saw Mo'Nique last night at the Beacon Theater. She looked so awesome. She was representing for the Big Girls. She had this hot pink number on. She looked every bit Red Carpet ready. At the beginning of the show she set the record straight on here recent weight loss.

She says she has not undergone weight loss surgery. She also stated that she was currently 224lbs. I do believe that was her current weight for two reasons:

  1. 5 minutes into the show she took off her high heel shoes and did the remainder of the show barefoot.

  2. I also believe this because home girl had sweat marks all over her dress by the end of the show.

Yet, with that said, she never seemed to have to stop and catch her breath in between jokes and sight gags. So my props go out to Mo'Nique for getting healthy without going Hollywood diet crazy.

She is also losing weight slowly because she state her weight as 232lbs in her October 2008 article for Essence Magazine .

Report: Women ignore pregnancy weight limits

Full Article

  • A normal-weight woman, as measured by BMI or body mass index, should gain between 25 and 35 pounds during pregnancy. A normal BMI, a measure of weight for height, is between 18.5 and 24.9.
  • An overweight woman — BMI 25 to 29.9 — should gain 15 to 25 pounds during pregnancy.
For the first time, the guidelines set a standard for obese women — BMI of 30 or higher: 11 to 20 pounds.
  • An underweight woman — BMI less than 18.5 — should gain 28 to 40 pounds.
  • The guidelines say women expecting twins can gain more: 37 to 54 pounds for a normal-weight woman, 31 to 50 pounds for the overweight, 25 to 42 pounds for the obese. There’s not enough information to set recommendations for triplets or more.

But even with the guidelines this is the recomendation for the overweight woman

What if a mom-to-be has gained too much? On average, overweight and obese women already are gaining five more pounds than the upper limit.

But pregnancy is not a time to lose weight, stressed guidelines co-author Dr. Anna Maria Siega-Riz of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

“It’s not, ‘Hey you gained enough, now you need to stop,’ ” Siega-Riz said. “Let’s take stock of where you’re at and start gaining correctly.”

‘Phantom fat’ can linger after weight loss

Body-image experts say it’s not uncommon for people, especially women, who have lost a lot of weight to be disappointed to some extent to discover that they still aren’t “perfect.” The excess fat is gone when they reach their goal weight, but they may have sagging skin, cellulite or a body shape that they still deem undesirable. Like Hicks, some even continue to see themselves as though they are overweight.

Experts say part of the problem in our body-obsessed culture is that many women — and increasingly more men — have highly unrealistic expectations of what weight loss can do for them. Too often, they think hitting their ideal weight will make them look like a swimsuit model in a magazine, and they’re disappointed when that’s not the case.

I have been blessed to be delusional. When I look in the mirror, I always look smaller then the scale says I am. The only time I can see is my true size is in a picture with measuring reference.

I take a lot of pictures in front of doors. So when I can't see the door around my hips. I have to accept that I am fat. It is a hard realization, so what I do when I can, is pose in open spaces with no references then I look smaller again.

I am also blessed to know that most of my problems are caused by my perception of events and the rest are due to economic issues. So I have no beliefs that my life will be better when smaller/thinner.

Celebs in Spanx!

Photos original found here.

I think it is crazy that celebs are always trying to look great to the point that they are abusing their body to become skinny (read Lindsey Lohan) but still have to wear slimming undergarments.
It just proves. Hollywood is filled with smoke and mirrors.
