Racist/Sexist/Classist Ad from India--Wow, Well Done!

Are you kidding me with this? This ad from India managed to be racist, sexist and classist all in one fell-swoop! It is for Lotte Choco Caramel With Mango Inside, "the choco-caramel-colored pregnant maid represents the Choco Caramel With Mango Inside." Link to Jezebel Article HERE.
I mean, what can you say? Wow, just wow? Isn't there any...THINKING about ad content?

Naomi Campbell vs. Cadbury

OMG is reporting that Naomi Campbell is angry over a Cadbury Chocolate advertisement compare her to a milk chocolate candy bar.

I get it black people don't want to be compared to inanimate objects. Cadbury has apologized and
pulled this ad. Yet, I wonder how many advertises, who weren't black, came up with this campaign not seeing this complaint coming.

Sex & Soda

NSFW!!!

This was really interesting to watch. Two things of note: 1.) I totally remember that Cindy Crawford ad and today she'd prolly be called fat if she were a contemporary model; 2.) the German Sprite ad at the end is crazy and worth watching the entire video to get to...yes, I would like European modeled healthcare/work-life balance, etc. but I could totally pass on their tv commercials.

Women Laughing Alone with Salad

This is hilarious, its a gallery of stock photos of women "laughing alone with salad" or fruit/veggies. Seriously, what's so funny? Is salad really that charming? Its just like those tampon ads with women jumping around in gauzy white skirts--so cliche that after a while, you're wondering? "Why arent' I thrilled to be alone with healthy food?" "Why don't I feel like wearing white while menstruating...isn't that the ideal to strive for in period protection?"

Anyway, checkout the gallery HERE.

A Response to the Dodge Ad from the Super Bowl

There were several great feminist take-downs of the crap ads that pervaded the multimillion dollar spots throughout the Super Bowl last week. The consensus seemed to be that advertisers thought that the best winning angle for ads this season was to portray men as down-trodden by the evil vagina-archy, bitches be the problem and slubby dudes just wanna have fun. One of my favorite responses, Amanda Marcotte's Thoughts on the Misogyny Bowl in advertising (versus a truly uplifting game).

My favorite quote:

You know it’s a rough year in misogynist Superbowl advertising when an ad suggesting that women’s role in bearing sons matters more than their very right to live can’t even win the title of “Most Misogynist”. (Though it’s only on a technicality---the Tebow ad that aired during the Super Bowl was too confusing to register as overtly hateful, though it did insinuate that the only reason women die in childbirth is they aren’t “tough” enough, and apparently had it coming.)

Echidne mention that the Dodge Charger ad was actually narrated by Michael C. Hall, he of Dexter fame whose serial killer drama is similarly narrated by said actor. Check out her full post here, but I gotta say she hit it on the head because it almost seemed like that ad would culminate in violence. Scary. Her summation: Women are ball-breaking bitches or they have horrible, horrible cooties, and you must act decisively! By buying some crappy product! To show that you are not pussy-whupped, nosir.

Yes, buying crappy products make you a man, bitches is the problem, etc. Tired.

Well, in defense, there's a great parody up to that Charger, "Man's Last Stand" called "Women's Last " which is, well, way more accurate in terms of crap gender expectations and inequities, including "I will make 75 cents to every dollar you make." Check it out:

Slim Hopes

I found this video via the Fat Nutritionist

It seems to be from the late 1990's, but its still relevant today. If anything, the stats might be worse for adolescent girls' self-esteem and disordered eating rates. Check it out and discuss!

Best quote: "it is profitable for women to feel terrible about themselves."

Is Fat Acceptance a Cop-Out?

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

In my opinion Fat Acceptance is not a cop-out if a size 12/14 refuses to try to become a size 00. I think the whole Fat Acceptance is about refusing to fit into an Advertisers mold.

I don't think people who advocate Fat Acceptance are looking for people who have high blood pressure and diabetes to continue to gain weight.

No Way, Check Out this Vintage Sugar Ad

From Vintage Ads HERE in its full size, its an ad promoting sugar for WEIGHT LOSS! For reals!!! In some ways its actually true, it mention that it is the fastest way to get energy (calories) through your blood-stream and that artificial sweetners don't do that (true, and they, we now know, can interfere with your sense of satiety), but still no mention of blood rush, then collapse which then leads to more eating that is common with sugar. Oh, well, its just interesting to see how they've been trying to sell us the Brooklyn Bridge for generations now, thanks Mad Men!
